Issues that matter

How do we talk about issues that matter?

I think it's very important to be passionate and informed about the issue that you think is important. By being informed it gives you that boost of confidence that you need to feel comfortable talking about controversial topics. Most people try to avoid topics like this because they feel uncomfortable or scared, but thats exactly why we much talk about it that way it becomes more of a normal thing for everyone. When talking to someone who doesn't view the topic the way you do both of y'all must stay calm and remember it's okay to have different opinions. It's more common for people to start fighting and trying to tell each other that they're wrong instead of just moving on. When people aren't arguing about the topic it's because one person is too scared or shy to speak up, which they shouldn't stay quiet because a lot of the time one of the people aren't educated about the topic and they never will be unless someone speaks up and tries to teach them what they don't know.

One thing that gets me nervous about teaching is how to talk about issues that matter with my students because some of the students parents might not have the same opinion that I have. I don't want the student going back home and telling their parents and making them mad at me.

  1. Andrea,
I really like your post. I think that it is also important to be informed. Especially on topics in which are controversal. I like that you acknowledged that most people do try and avoid topics that make them uncomfortable, because that is totally true. I think that this also leads us as a society to become uninformed because it makes it seem like we are setting aside these topics and refuse to open up about them. Great post!
